Phenolic compounds identification, antioxidant activity (in vitro) and acute oral toxicity in wistar rat of the Moroccan Lavandula stoechas plant
Abstract : avandula stoechas, known as "Halhal" vascular is a medicinal plant of the lamiaceae family, widely used in traditional medicine worldwide as an antispasmodic in colic pain, expectorant, stimulant for various diseases of the central nervous system. In the context of the valorization of this plant, two extracts with two preparation methods (maceration and soxhlet) were prepared from the different parts of this plant: one ethanolic and the other dichloromethane. The quantitative estimation of total polyphenols, flavonoids and tannins by the colorimetric method showed that the extracts are rich in these compounds. The evaluation of antioxidant capacity carried out by the DPPH free radical trapping method indicated that the ethanolic extract has significant antioxidant activity in the stem part, with the effective concentration to inhibit the 50% DPPH (EC50) is 0.096 mg/ml, higher than that recorded by ascorbic acid (EC50 = 1.04 μg/ml). The analysis of the ethanolic extract of Lavandula stoechas by GC identified several common compounds between the four parts, with different percentages and retention times, most of which are antioxidants, bicyclic monoterpene derivatives, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids, alkanes, sterols and triterpenoids. L-camphor (42.68%), palmitic acid (17.29%), linoleic acid (15.98%) and oleic acid (14.01%) were the main components. The determination of the Lethal dose 50 (LD50) of ethanol extracts showed that the fruit is the most toxic with a value of 3548.1 mg/kg which is significant compared to the other parts

Correlation of Apolipoprotein B with lipid profile and Non- HDL cholesterol as markers of atherosclerotic risk in type 2 Diabetic patients with Hypertension

Abstract : Diabetes mellitus and Hypetension are the gateways to cardiovascular diseases and they never hesitate to conquer any community or population. Patients are at high risk of cardiovascular disease when Diabetes Mellitus and Hypertension coexist, which requires accurate risk assessment and focused treatment. Measurement of Apolipoprotein- B and Non -HDL cholesterol as part of a routine lipid profile could play a pivotal role in optimal atherosclerotic risk reduction. Hence, we studied the relationship between Apolipoprotein-B, Non -HDL cholesterol and lipid profiles in diabetic patients with Hypertension. Apolipoprotein-B, Lipid Profile and Non-HDL cholesterol were estimated in Type 2 Diabetic patients with hypertension and they were compared with age and sex-matched healthy controls. Serum was analyzed for lipid profile in a fully automated Beckman AU 480 analyzer, Non-HDL cholesterol was calculated value and Serum Apo-B by the turbidimetry method was done in a semi autoanalyzer. Significant increase in values of Apolipoprotein-B, fasting blood sugar, total cholesterol, LDL- cholesterol, Triglycerides, and Non-HDL cholesterol was seen in type 2 diabetic patients with Hypertension compared to controls. There was a significant positive correlation between Apolipoprotein-B and fasting blood sugar, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, triglycerides, and Non-HDL cholesterol. The findings of the present study stated that the majority of the patients studied had low HDL-C, elevated non-HDL-C, elevated total cholesterol, high triglycerides, elevated LDL-C, and elevated Apolipoprotein-B. Apolipoprotein-B had a positive linear correlation with total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-C, non-HDL-C. The strongest positive correlation was with non-HDL-C. Patients with low HDL-C had high Apo B levels
